I had booked a cruise in August 2020 and hence booked my flights through a travel agent on Emirates. I got an email from the travel agent today saying the flight in August has been cancelled by Emirates and they would refund me the amount. Since August is a long way off I would like to retain my booking. I am sure the situation with Covid 19 should settle down by August 2020. If I were to rebook on an airline I am sure I would be paying a lot more. Is there any way out that I can refuse this action by Emirates?

Well if the flight is cancelled, it is cancelled. Refusing a refund won’t make them put it back on.

You could maybe see if they can re-route you, either a different UK departure point, or slightly amend your dates? They might do that at no extra cost. Depends on your route and which bit is cancelled. It seems most UK routes are planned to be back up and running by May/June, but it’s all subject to change and to be honest Covid-19 won’t have disappeared by August...

Considering this whole forum is full of people who can’t get refunds and are only being offered vouchers I’d be inclined to take it.

Looking at an Australian website this week they were saying it will take 2-3 years for international travel to recover. Cruising has been very badly affected as well. I think they are going to be a very long time before they can find countries willing to let them land.

Do a dummy booking on Emirates website and see if you're flights are really cancelled. The latest update I saw from them was 1st July for flights to be back to normal.  Now that could change as things develop, but for now have a look and see.
In addition, Emirates are not offering refunds, only vouchers so your travel agent's offer seems decidely odd.
