Santander: Cancelled Card

My debit card was declined in a local supermarket at 2:15pm today - luckily, I had enough cash to pay.  When I called Santander to ask why, they said that they'd cancelled it as some perp had used it at 4:50am to buy an O2 top-up.
I'm puzzled as to why I couldn't have been informed automatically, as soon as the card was cancelled, rather than by being declined.  I wonder when/if Santander would have told me.

    Did you get any text to ask if you had made the O2 top up?

    No, he meant from Santander....

    They usually send a text if unsure a transaction is yours. Also they would not stop and replace the card without telling you. But they will block further spending to make you call them.

    Oops, sorry for my confusion.  However, I didn't get a text - the first I knew there was a problem was when the card was declined.
