To renew or not renew annual travel insurance

Our annual policy expires 13 April 2020. We have two holidays planned in June 2020 that were booked before FCO advice was issued to not travel to the destinations (due to Corona virus). My belief is that the event that would lead to cancellation was the FCO initial issue date of advice to not travel. Therefore I believe we are covered by insurance if the holiday gets cancelled after 13 April i.e. if the previously issued FCO advice remains in place.

However LV are insisting I renew in case the advice changes. This is extortion as the insurable event has surely occurred already.

What will you do if restrictions lift and you go?

The FCO advice not to travel was given on 17th March, for 30 days.  Technically your holiday stands unaffected, and your insurers will hang on to this.  You'll have to play the waiting game, or have reason to claim for another insurable reason in the meantime.
If you switch your insurance to another provider, you'll lose the cover for coronavirus related claims you currently have.  If I were you I'd extend the cover, unless your holiday providers cancel the holidays first.

Just out of interest (my policy doesn't expire until June) but are they offering you the same Ts and Cs and comparable price to this year?

Continuous cover should apply - so existing bookings that were made before Coronavirus became a pandemic should continue to be covered - however new bookings would not benefit as it is now a known risk.

Thanks. I thought that. I just wondered about going forward.

Quote was £30 higher and frankly fair enough but still frustrating as it’s unlikely it will be used this summer. Out of interest I have noticed that there is a 14 day cool off period that may be useful .
