redundancy and furlough

I and a number of my colleagues are being made redundant tomorrow by The Royal British Legion, nothing to do with Corona virus. We have asked if given the timing and the chances of finding work if we could be furloughed. The Legion have refused. I know that they cannot be forced to help but is there any legal reason why they cannot?

There would be some cost to them of doing it, and some employers are concerned that the scheme cannot apply if the reason for the redundancy is not COVID -19. As a charity, they also have to minimise costs and risk so as to maximise funds for their charitable objects.

    From the guidance...

The Coronavirus Job Retention Scheme is a temporary scheme open to all UK employers for at least three months starting from 1 March 2020. It is designed to support employers whose operations have been severely affected by coronavirus (COVID-19).

If needed look at eligibility for Universal Credit https://www.citizensadvice.org.uk/benefits/universal-credit/

There are online calculators to help you assess entitlement  https://www.gov.uk/benefits-calculators

Be aware that claiming UC will end any Tax Credits, Housing Benefit or other means tested benefits you currently get.

You will be excluded from UC if you have savings over £16,000.

You may also be able to claim Council Tax Reduction from your local council.

Information I post is for England unless otherwise stated. Some rules may be different in other parts of UK.
