Coronavirus delayed car delivery leads to increased VED !!

Options
I have a lease car which was due for delivery on 31 March 2020, the date was important to beat the increase in first year VED which on this vehicle would be an extra £750.  The car an no longer be delivered by the dealer, because of this the lease company wont pay the dealer and therefore the car cannot be registered.   The only person who will lose out here will be me as I will have to foot the additional VED charge.   Has anyone heard if the new emissions rules will be delayed to help those who have cars trapped at dealerships that cant be registered??

It's a lease vehicle ... why does the VED fall on you?

Yes, unless it is really a PCP and as is often the case, the OP is muddled as to the difference between PCP which is a for of HP and Lease, which isn't.

Alternatively it is a Mercedes Finance car, they didn't use to pay the VED not sure that is still the case.

My Lease with Leaseplan (  definitely not PCP) says they will charge the cost of RFL and that I shall pay any increase in RFL during the term which starts when I took delivery of the vehicle so I am afraid that you may be mistaken

Your contract is with Leaseplan. If your contract doesn't say anything about the liability for changes in VED due to late delivery, then the liability remains with you. If this was serious issue for you, you should have had it put into the contract before you signed it.

I'm not aware of any government response to the issue of delayed deliveries, and doubt that there will be one as the issue is a small one; you would have had to find the VED increase next year, so any help would be less than £1000. I don't think the government is going to help people with such small amount of extra cost, when many self-employed people has lost earnings of 10  times this amount and more and are not getting any help.

You could ask Leaseplan for a goodwill gesture to help with the extra VED.
The comments I post are my personal opinion. While I try to check everything is correct before posting, I can and do make mistakes, so always try to check official information sources before relying on my posts.
  • You can try to negotiate with lease company. However it's no one's fault and someone will have to pay for it.
And to explain for others, it's difference in first registration VED before and after 1st of April, not road tax.
