Insulation question

Hello, our self build has been delayed (again:mad:) so to be realistic sounds like we will be stuck renting here for at least a year. Oil has got so expensive, the house is a square shaped cottage with all the rooms on the one floor and double glazing BUT the heat is escaping. I have been up to the loft, not much insulation.Could I just get a few rolls and drop it on top of the wood there? (Then roll it up at the end and take it with us to re-use?) Is that daft?Fed up paying out to fix things here, landlord is not interested.
Some parts of the loft have open rafters with "lumps" of insulation, other parts have wood dropped over to walk on.The house has obviously had an inept DIY'er at large at some stage since there is a hole the size of a cup to the loft from the hotpress and a few other holes besides, he was obviously trying to put in extra wires at some stage - no sign of mice though!!!!
Oh, the other great heat escape is the fire, it appears to have a hole thing at the back for a back boiler which the DIY'er has knackered. Wondering how I could safely block it to throw the heat forward.
Sorry, this is long winded.
Any advice appreciated.

you can certainly just install the insulation in the loft on top of the joists.
anything will help retain the heat. wouldnt bother taking it with me though, more trouble than its worth.
re the fire? is it an open fire? ie wood or coal?
if so then brick up the back with firebricks. make sure you use the correct fire cement to finish off.
esp if using ordinary bricks.Get some gorm.0 -

just had another thought if you are moving within one year.
use anything you can get for free, for the insulation,, inc say carpets cardboard etc?
beware the extra fire risk of course.Get some gorm.0
