Hole in stair carpet

I need a new stair carpet, but can't get one while we're on lockdown. The bottom step has a patch of worn carpet  that has worn right through. I'm worried about the safety aspect (2 grandchildren frequently up and down my stairs) but don't now what to do for the best. Is there some sort of non-slip tape I could buy to stick over the hole? or should I remove the carpet completely from just the bottom stair and leave the wood? I don't have anyone in the family who could patch it for me so just want to make it safe without being too bothered about how it looks for now. I'll get a new one as soon as things are back to normal
. any advice would be great

What is it that you are worried about with the grandchildren?

Removing or patching may make it worse

Grandkids won't be with you currently.
Lift the one step of carpet and swop it round with a riser bit of carpet, failing that a bit of duck/ gaffer tape should do the job.

It's the bottom step, it's not going to make anybody fall far!  Kids bounce anyway.  I'd just leave it.
You could use something like duct tape if you want but it'll probably just create another thing to watch out for!

Thank you for the replies. Got some duct tape and it's covered it well--might be slightly slippery but slipping a bit is better then someone getting their foot caught in the hole and tripping heavily--and as someone said it's the bottom step so not far to fall if anyone slips.
