TUI Holiday

I have booked to go to Gran Canaria with TUI on 10th August, I have paid £150 deposit. Went on yesterday to Manage my Booking to cancel thinking I would only lose the deposit I have paid, but the cancellation fee was £600. Don’t know whether to cancel now or wait until they cancel me. Balance is due by 18th May and I have heard they may start issuing credit notes rather than refunds which I wouldn’t want. Anyone else in the same dilemma? Not sure which way to go?

August is a long way away. If it were me, I'd wait, but if you'd prefer to risk losing £750 now rather than have a credit note in future, then cancel.1

You’ve paid a low deposit. The £600 is not a cancellation fee, it is the full deposit. You owe them this, even if you cancel. Your options are:
1) Cancel now. You will owe them the extra £450 anyway. You could ignore it and not pay it, but TUI will probably invoice you and may chase it.2) Leave the booking in place. Then you will have to pay the balance when it’s due. Nobody knows whether holidays to the Canaries will be happening or not by August. If they aren’t then TUI will cancel you. In theory you would be entitled to a refund, the reality right now is that you may end up with a credit voucher. There’s more discussion on the varying arguments around this dilemma on the many existing TUI threads.2
