Sabbatical leave and furlough

Hello im looking for a bit advice please, I have been on unpaid sabbatical leave since January 2020, I am planning to return in Jan 2021. I have taken the sabbatical leave to look after my 2 year old boy. I have been teaching 4-5 Pilates classes during the week whilst on the leave. As my main income in the past 3 years has been greater from my employment and not self employment, I am not eligible to apply for self employment help from the government. I cannot teach the classes at the moment as the gyms are shut. My employment job is to run a small corporate part - time fitness centre. The fitness centre is now also closed. I have worked for my employer for over 10 years. Would you advise me to contact my employer and ask to furlough me and ask for 80% of my usual wage from the govermnent scheme for the employees on my behalf? I am not getting any income at the moment, except child benefit. I am eligible to get from the universal credit to receive approximately £50 a month. Thank you for taking the time to read my post. Any advice, would greatly appreaciated.

You can always ask and it would be up to them.  But the scheme is to protect jobs that may be lost during the coronavirus. As you have said yours is not one so would not meet the criteria.

You are not eligible to be furloughed

Employees on unpaid leave cannot be furloughed, unless they were placed on unpaid leave after 28 February.

What is making your UC entitlement so low?

Information I post is for England unless otherwise stated. Some rules may be different in other parts of UK.
  • Thank you very much for your comment.
My partner still works and as his income is included in the UC then my entitlement is so low. Do you know if I could get any other financial support?
