TSB login changed

Previously you had to enter ID and password on the first screen, then 3 characters from the memorable word on the second screen.

Now you enter ID only on the first screen, then password and 3 characters on the second.

This seems a rather pointless change and it will break some auto login sequences.  But worse than that they have changed the maximum permitted length of the password. It now specifies 6-15 alphanumeric characters, must include at least 1 number and 3 letters.  My 20 random character password doesn't work anymore and had to be reset.

They made the change to incorporate 2 factor authentication through an OTP code to your phone. Although it won't send a code if it recognises your device from a previous login.

Yeah, this is just dumb behaviour by TSB - I don't know why they'd make passwords shorter, but at a very minimum, if you're going to do it, let users know and force a reset in a planned manner. First I knew was when I couldn't log in any more with my 16 random characters for me, which has been fine since the infamous IT upgrade but is now blocked client-side.

Yes. Making customers think their password is wrong, when it's simply a case that it's now too long and you'd just like them to change it, is pretty shoddy UX design as one might expect from TSB these days...

There's also a glitch when signing up for internet banking as you can no longer use your name in the password, but when registering for internet banking (either as part of an application or subsequently using the standard registration route) it doesn't tell you that's not acceptable and allows it and goes ahead and completes the registration but doesn't actually register you at all. It's only if you register for internet banking via branch and they text you a temporary password that I discovered this glitch (via a relative) as doing it that way it does reject using your name in the password and then registers successfully when you use an acceptable password!

Thanks for this, I won't waste time re-trying my password, as I would have if not fore-warned.

  • I think TSB will be another account I stop using. I was never really happy following their big crash, but as things were set up and worked, it was a useable account. If they are going to start altering things without telling customers first .......
