http://www.argos.co.uk/static/Product/partNumber/6768023/Trail/searchtext>BELKIN.htm
it works fine but on the box it says can be used on note book and desk tops so can i just buy another for the 2nd desktop?

i can buy this locally for 16 pounds which i thought was reasonable is there a different/better/good value for money one i should purchase in stead

Will your laptop work in the upstairs bedroom? If so, get the same for your new desktop (£16 is reasonable). It's a USB connection so it's compatible with your new PC. You could also buy a USB extension lead to allow you to position the unit in a better spot for reception ie away from the floor / back of the PC.0

Get it from Argos and you can probably just take it back if the range is not enough.0
