NSI taking out £3k before getting signature - overdrawn fee results

Hi,

I was hoping someone here might be able to offer a little advice on this situation:

My husband signed up online to get a national savings and investments ISA, and did all the online stuff. He was told that they'd need his signature for the next stage of the process, but yesterday they took out the £3k from his current account regardless of the fact that he hadn't given them a signature or had any paperwork from them as yet.

He checked his online balance the very morning the money went out, saw he'd gone overdrawn, and instantly transferred money across from another account to go back into the black. Because of being overdrawn for an hour, the bank has now charged him £25 in fees.

My husband is trying to get NSI to refund him the £25 and I've advised him to try to get the fee wiped by his bank by calling up and asking nicely.

Do any of you have any suggestions as to what he ought to do?

I don't claim any expertise but -

I would have thought that both the courses of action you have suggested are sensible, followed up with letters if the phone calls don't get the required result. Followed by a letter to NS&I asking why they didn't follow their own procedure.
