Claiming for Carona virus

Hi, I have been self employed for 30 years and always paid my taxes. A year ago I had a nervous breakdown and been struggling to cope at work. On the 12th of March this year (2 weeks ago) it got to the point where I couldn't cope and went on the sick to have a break and try to deal with my mental health. Although I haven't received any financial help yet I will get about £330 a month of sick pay and I have an insurance which will pay £1,000 a month. I have been paying into the insurance for 20+ years and never claimed before.
Although I still don't feel well enough to go back to work would I be able to claim anything from the scheme where you can get 80% of your wages even if it meant signing off being sick. I'm in the building trade and work in people's houses so wouldn't be able to work anyway. The income I am getting doesn't cover my outgoing s so any help would be appreciated. My last 3 years of earning would be around £33,000 a year.
Regards David

You don't stop trading as a self employed person if you are off sick for a couple of weeks.
  • have lost trading/partnership trading profits due to COVID-19
Wasn't sure if they would say I haven't lost any profit as I was off sick. Bit against my morals but could either sign off being sick and back off under the loss of work due to virus.

On re-reading your initial post, because you said you have been self employed for 30 years I referred you to the self employment grant guidance. However you also mention wages and receiving sick pay. These are incompatible with self employment.
  • Sorry Jeremy. Probably me being a bit thick but don't really follow the last comment. For self employed you can get 80% of your average profit?
Are you saying you don't receive sick pay if you are self employed.? Sorry for all the questions.

    4. Can I get self-employed Sick Pay?

Statutory Sick Pay (SSP) is paid by an employer when an employee is unable to work due to sickness. If you are self employed, you cannot get Statutory Sick Pay as you are working for yourself and therefore do not have an employer.

If you are self employed and temporarily unable to work due to illness, you should check if you have made enough national insurance contributions to qualify for New Style Employment and Support Allowance.

That's why I asked the question.

OP could have some income pretection insurance policy in place to pay out if he's sick - he may not be referring to SSP

    He has. That's the £1,000. What's the £330?
  • Sorry for the confusion. When I refer to sick pay I mean universal credit. They said at the job centre that's the amount I would get while off sick.
