Can you get a second job while furloughed and being given the 80%?

Myself and a lot of my colleagues are dependent on all out our wage and more importantly the steady overtime that we earn with it. We have recently been furloughed for the foreseable future and will now be getting the 80% from the government. Many of us have debated getting a temp job fulfilling the void in the  food retail industry or NHS etc just to help make up the differences and to help get by with everything. If we were to do so would it stop us from being eligible for the 80%etc or will it just be simply classed as a taxable (although heavily) second job?

    See guidance for employees:

"If you currently have more than one employer

You can be put on furlough by one employer and continue to work for another, if it is permitted within your employment contract.

If you’re put on furlough by more than one employer, you’ll receive separate payments from each employer. The 80% of your normal wage up to a £2,500 monthly cap applies to each job."

It would be odd given this if going out to get a second job now would be a problem, but remember your contract of employment needs to allow you to do a second job (if it doesn't you need the OK from your employer).

  • This is the same logic I am going off but I just don't want to lose my 80% and worsen the situation.
I have already been offered secondary work. Just don't want to risk it until certain
