TNT charges

I've just had an invoice for some yarn I brought from Turkey. The sender charged me to send it via TNT and he says hes paid his end but I've been charged £29.26 from TNT for yarn worth £28. The invoice says VAT duty and £20 deferred payment charge. Anyone know why I have this amount to pay and is it correct?

there are charges to pay when you import goods. Did the sender state he had paid the UK vat and the customs charges?
  • Think it was just fast track delivery charge. I can understand paying VAT if I have to but the £20 I dont understand  and the VAT is more than 20%

What did the invoice he included on the packaging for customs say?
If he didn't include one, they've probably just guessed hence the large figures.

The £20 is for TNT to process the VAT and duty, pay it for you in advance and then reclaim it from you.

VAT is payable on the whole consignment, including the delivery charge? (It's VAT or the customs charge - import duty - which includes the delivery in the calculation).

The amount charged for VAT could be about right.
The OP states that the total charged by TNT was £29.26, of which £20 was their processing and handling fee.
This leaves £9.26 for VAT. The yarn itself was £28 so the VAT on this is £5.60 and the remaining £3.66 could be the VAT on the postage cost.

What is the clearance administration charge?

TNT pays the Duty and Tax charges on your behalf to ensure we can deliver your shipment as quickly as possible. This incurs an administration fee of 5% of the combined Duty and VAT charge or £20.00 (whichever is greater).
