Will a cancelled direct debit affect my credit rating?

Hi
I'm currently awaiting a universal credit award and subsequent council tax reduction.
I spoke to my local authority and they advised me to simply cancel my direct debit for council tax (due on the 1st) and once my UC award is approved I would receive support for paying the council tax.
They have stated they will not be chasing up missed payments etc during the CV crisis.
My question is if I cancel my direct debit and the council then attempt to take their payment will this affect my credit rating?
My rating was quite poor years ago and I have worked really hard to bring it right back up over recent times and don't want it ruined again
Thanks in advance and keep safe and well everyone xx

If they do not want to mark it as a negative they do not have to but I would get that in writing as I am sure when they come chasing you for it the person will not remember telling you that. The government is going to need a lot of money so I am sure they will be getting round to chasing up bills rather quickly once they have got over the initial shock reaction. The people that normal chase these up will still be working they might just be busier than usually.

I'd follow their advice if you feel confident it is given correctly but whoever told you.
A debt on the CT will only become an issue after they start writing to you to catch up as far as I know.
On the other hand if you fail to meet a payment from your bank account then your back can report that and will affect your credit score.
Ask your bank if you are worried.0
