At best!
So furloughed workers cant be paid if companies cant afford to pay them
And self employed workers have to wait for HMRC to contact them and they then 'might' be eligble for something in about 90 days time - maybe

It sounds unfair but don't forget most people who work for themselves do so in the knowledge that there maybe times when they don't have any work and they have to plan for that. The government have options in place whether it be benefits, loans etc to tide businesses over until a time when they can get some money back. It's not perfect, by any shape or form, but you can't expect to have access to immediate free money in times like this, especially in complicated areas such as putting in a workable system for the self-employed. Also it will probably be at least a month before these furloughed payments for employees kick in.2

A self employed person may plan for a lull in work, a week or so without anything - but they have the option to tout for work, promote their business and generate revenue.neilmcl said:It sounds unfair but don't forget most people who work for themselves do so in the knowledge that there maybe times when they don't have any work and they have to plan for that. Right now, they are screwed. Nothing coming in, no ability to earn anything. So no, saying that they plan for downtime isn't an excuse. Infact, it's downright ignorant.

Please don't take out frustrations on people who are only trying to help. I post to this forum for free for about 7 hours a day, trying to help people, and I can sometimes seem terse or unsympathetic, when really I am just dog tired and facing the same question for the hundredth time. Neilmcl is a very regular poster too.2

Thing with my sector of self employment - construction, is that we pay our taxes monthly the same as PAYE, our tax is stopped at source via the CIS system, so HMRC have our tax money up front, we actually have to claim back any overpayment at the end of the yearneilmcl said:It sounds unfair but don't forget most people who work for themselves do so in the knowledge that there maybe times when they don't have any work and they have to plan for that. And unlike other times where contracts end and we have to find new employment - which I accept as part of the industry, we get no redundancy at that point either btw - with this pandemic, there is no other work, we are in complete lockdown
Waiting three months, maybe longer is simply not possible for many people - the fabric of society could break down1 -
The problem i am having is 3 fold as self employed 1) As i work in exhibition and trade show industry all work cancelled from start of Feb 2)No chance of any work in exhibtions who knows when could be 6 months could be a year.GazNicki said:

3) I am struggling to get paid from companies i did work for over last few months and some last year.
As these companies are thinking about their own finances and not wanting to pay invoices
Just an awful situation.1 -
Quite frankly, although I'm sure they will have checked these timescales with those who are going to have to make it happen, it amazes me that they believe they are going to be able to get anything up and running in twelve weeks.I can't imagine there's any way they're going to be able to process the claims manually, even if they take on additional workers (who would all have to be ID and DBS checked). And as far as I'm aware there isn't much if anything in the way of existing automated processing that they could use, so they're probably going to have to write stuff from scratch - not something that I think HMRC and DWP have done much of internally in the past as they've historically outsourced a lot of their computing development, so they may even have to fasttrack some new contracts .Just look how long it took them to get Universal Credit to a point where it could accept claims from everyone.....0
-
It also works against the self employed who have made provisions for a bad situation as if you have captial above £16000 you are not eligible to claim the universal credit.

I believe it may take until the end of April for the government to open the scheme whereby employers will be reimbursed. Employers are, however, expected to pay their employees the 80% now - if cash flow is a problem, they can apply for a Business Interruption Loan.neilmcl said:Also it will probably be at least a month before these furloughed payments for employees kick in.0 -
If you are an established company and can't last 3 months you should not be trading. - popcorn anyone....0
