Can I request Furlough

Hi, my wife is 27 weeks pregnant and I’m scared of going into work and possibly catching virus and bringing it home with me. My work knows this but have not done anything to accommodate or help. I’m a machinist so can’t work from home, they have marked out tape areas around machines but we still have to share toilets, canteen, tooling, inspection equipment, computers. Union told them to close immediately and they refused. I wanted to know if I can request furlough in my situation so I don’t have to go in or is it only if the company closes to everyone?

Thanks

You can request, they don't have to grant this.
They could just put one person on furlough, they don't have to close completely.

Thanks for that, have asked for it and they have said it’s not an option so wasn’t sure if it wasn’t allowed or they just didn’t want to.

Same here i asked to be furloughed even though due to be made redundantnext week. Got told by employers they are  not applying for it as consider their roles needed and have things to do. I dont though, due to be redundant. What can i do?

    self certify?

seems at odds to say your role is redundant but your needed.

But presumably it would also be at odds if they considered the role permanently redundant but then tried to apply for furlough with no intention of the role being reprised when this situation is over. Presumably self-certify for a week illness could be best case or try to do that week whilst maintaining as much social distancing as possible and accepting it's still low risk you'd catch it.

I have an Army pension coming in, about £1400 per month as I fought for Queen and country, as I said in my last post, I have been made redundant, what can I claim?
This is the first time in 35 years of being out of work

I’m not sure you’ll get anything. None of the schemes mentioned by the chancellor seem to cover this situation. Plus on an income of £1400 a month you’ll probably be unable to claim any benefits.

You may be best looking at a part time job in a supermarket to supplement your pension.

As you're probably well aware that may simply be part of a negotiating strategy between the union and employer.  The union may be well aware closure is not an option but think that in demanding it, the employer might be prompted to take action to meet a satisfactory outcome for both the employer and employees.
