Have you actually already exchanged?  If not there is no current legal obligation

  • Yes, we have exchanged . It was all done before the virus was an issue.  Completion was due next week.

Suppose your buyers complete and move in (leave your furniture there pro tem) and you arrange for your animals to be fed?
  • Thanks for the advice. Sadly, animals need a lot more than just feeding. they need stabling at night, putting in fields in day etc  I had thought about that but we will be more than 2 hours away.  Also, perhaps, I am being sensitive but leaving my furniture/effects  with a complete stranger feels really odd and what will I have to use in my new home ? (rhetorical question)

You are the one delaying things here so its in your best interest to reach a suitable agreement with them given that you have exchanged. Yes, you have a legal obligation to complete which the current guideline does not stop you from, it will make it harder.
Maybe offer to rent the place from them for some months until you are able to move unless you are willing to pay the cost of pulling out?
  • Thanks Chummy. I am only delaying because the current government coronavirus restrictions will not allow me to move, I want to go  - not something I have chosen. Offering to rent met with - we want to have use of the annex even in a renting situation !  But thanks for your thoughts, anyway.

Pay a local to do it?

Needs must when the devil drives? Hire a large van and take the essentials?

  • Under current restrictions, not sure 'hiring a van is an option', but I understand what you are trying to say. thanks anyway, for taking time to respond.

You are allowed to move. Michael Gove today even said all house moves can go ahead. And even if you weren't, the government guidance does not absolve you of your legal responsibilities under the terms of the contract.

You are liable for the buyers costs if you don't move. They may feel they are in a similar situation.

They may not be able to delay completion as mortgage offers had an expiry date. But if they can they may be amenable to an extension. Otherwise renting it from them or moving out next week will be your only remaining options, subject to their agreement.

Many home movers also still working.

    Good luck.
  • Hi. I've already moved out of my rental house but my furniture is still instu awaiting removal. Removal company stopped working re covid19. Notified rental company of situation they suggest I have to keep paying agred rent. Is this right?
