Furlough leave if not employed in February

I started a new job on March 2nd. I was laid off temporarily on Monday 23rd due to coronavirus and now the company is closing temporarily. They said we should get furlough leave, but I may not be entitled to it as I wasn't working in February. I understand you had to be on the pay roll on February 28th? Is it right that I won't get it? Is there anything else I can claim instead?

Hold tight and wait to see what comes out in the coming days from HRMC about the rules. Understand it's already been a week and I would be getting anxious too.
I expected more clarity for new workers as there must be so many of you but not finding anything yet. That does not mean it's not coming though.

Martin Lewis has just said that you can contact your old employer who can still add it to next mths payroll and pay you
But you need to contact them
  • What if you didn't leave on the best terms? Cant see my ex employer being very cooperative?

What if you were last employed in July 2019?  I was self employed for 6 weeks in September/October but I know that won't count.
Can I add that I wasn't claiming JSA whilst unemployed... I was managing on CTC.

My daughter was employed pre 28th Feb,but left to take another job.
This has been put on hold because of the virus.
She has contacted her previous employer who have said they haven't got the cash to pay her.
Is it possible for them to claim furlough leave for her and then reimburse her when they receive the payment?
    Advice would be appreciated.

To be furloughed you must be on a payroll between Feb 28th and March 19th. If she was then it will be totally down to her employer at that time whether they furlough her and they don't have to do that. Who ever her employer was at the time she'll need to speak to them. Otherwise, if she doesn't have savings/capital of more than £16,000 then she should look at claiming Universal Credit.

A claim for UC will end any tax credits.
  • Hello, I am not sure if this is the right place to put this and this is my first post so please excuse me. I was not on a payrole between the 28th February and the 19th March, but was paid on the 27th of March for a short contract I worked (PAYE). I am a PAYE Contract worker. Am I right in thinking the above means I cannot qualify for Furlough with any company, and also I have savings over the amount for Universal Credit so is my only option Job Seekers allowance. I know others are in worse situations than me but I just wanted to check on here. If any one can confirm or offer any advice that would be great, thank you. Ollie
