Universal credit claim identity verification problem

My son is trying to make a claim after being in a queue for 2 days. Although he has a driving licence the only option was to provide passport details which he couldn't because he does not have a passport. At the end he was notified that he would have to bring verification documents to the local Jobcentre office before 4th April. Two questions. Has his claim been accepted and will he get a phone call? Secondly how can he adhere to this deadline when the benefits information is saying not to visit the jobcentres re Covid 19 situation. I'm worried he will slip through the net and his claim will be cancelled. Any information will be most welcome

  • Being a mum is difficult. Could he not come here and ask the questions himself?

ID is a key part of the process and they need some ID. The archetypal letter from your Mum does not cut it - yet.

Would not worry too much.  The Job Centre has various processes in place to verify identity.  It will be a phone call appointment, from the Job Centre to verify ID and anything else.
Suggest sending a journal message, just mentioning the problems in getting through to book the appointment.
The comments I post are personal opinion. Always refer to official information sources before relying on internet forums. If you have a problem with any organisation, enter into their official complaints process at the earliest opportunity, as sometimes complaints have to be started within a certain time frame.
  • My son has the same problem trying to verify his ID, he spent 2 days trying to do it, 2 different ways where he was in a queue of over 61000 people, eventually got a email to do it but it failed both times, he did put an entry in the journal but no phone call as yet.

Apparently there was 145,000 people in the queue at one point.

We are working as hard as we can to clear the backlog, including working longer hours and weekend overtime. We have lost over a quarter of our staff to self-isolation. A new process is starting next week, which will help.
