how to "UN furlough "a worker

i work in a private day nursery providing care for keyworkers children who have no alternative childcare on any given day . staff have been discussing the furlough option ,but are worried that if the virus escalates and we require staff to return due to increased children numbers , that the process of their return immediately may not be possible ?? so my question is can a furlough be cancelled for a staff member to come back on board should our key children numbers increase in a couple of weeks? any advice appreciated thanks

Surely this is something your employer would need to ask HMRC, nobody on here is going to know.

What is your role in the nursary?
Do you run it, or are you one of the staff who usually work there.

The details are yet to be released but indications are pointing toward the scheme being designed to be flexible such that employers could return a furloughed worker if needed, such as if another employee falls sick but there will be a minimum period of three weeks they are furloughed for.

We don't know how that will work in practicality but it's highly likely you will be able to come back after whatever minimum period of time has passed.

You obviously are running a business that is currently able to continue trading during this national disaster, providing day care to those essential workers who otherwise would have to give up their own work to look after their children if you did not offer the service you do.

I understand that is a probably a significant shortfall in your usual business, and as a result you require less staff at this time. But you still need to retain sufficient staff to allow for the odd absence, either because of medical reasons, other approved times off (perhaps unpaid) as often occurs, or even paid leave.

To your credit, you appear to intend to retain all your staff, even if some are furloughed, during this period by taking advantage of the government grants available.

You will need to decide a fair process as to who you intend to furlough and who you intend to retain in full at this time. That should probably be the same process that you would adopt if you were going to make people redundant.

The Coronsvirus Job Retentention Scheme is intended for just a situation as yours, to avoid peple otherwise being made redundant.

Just as you would otherwise make people redundant were it not for the saftety net of the Coronsvirus Job Retentention Scheme, you can hire further workers as buisness needs dictate. The obvious advantage is that rather than having to go out and try and recruit new, inexperienced staff, you will know who to call upon and the experinence they already have with you.

once again i thank you for your replies in this very uncertain time xx the easy option would be to close altogether and all staff furlough , but then our frontline parents and children would be without familiar chidcare, so we are determined to try and stay open whilst maintaining staff ratios , and offer our care to those that need it most . stay safe and thankyou
