because furlough was brought in to help businesses, not individuals. The governments attempt to address childcare issues was to keep some schools open.

Have you put your details into a calculator such as turn2us? Do you have a husband/ partner who is working or savings over £16k which could reduce/ nullify your entitlement?

You can't furlough someone so they can self isolate or so they can look after their children.
Suggesting they can make this request is wrong.
Those self isolating for 3 months are those who are shielding, and they can be placed on furlough. Other people are only supposed to be isolating for 7 or 14 days.

But people are looking at it from the wrong angle. It's supposed to be if your employer is looking to furlough people, not just because the employee fancies it.

  • I am so glad this thread is here. It seems to be the only place where the basic facts, which are clear, are being stated.

The unfortunate thing is, unlike Ireland and others, the scheme rules and application have not been set up. Therefore, the ONLY detail about the rules is the line quoted above about why the scheme has been set up.  Unfortunately, EVERY political or economic reporter or editor on EVERY bulletin is refering to the 80% scheme as de rigueur for employed people.

The other thing that gets on my nerves us the misunderstanding of 'ESSENTIAL'. It is not refering to if the JOB BEING DONE is essential, but the fact that if you cant do the job from home it is ESSENTIAL you go to work.

Therefore, EVERYONE on the cramped tube trains, if they are travelling to work, has an ESSENTIAL reason to be there. Maybe their employers cant afford to let them not be there, it isnt the employee's fault, it isn't the employer's fault.

Why arent the news outlets being more responsible with their reporting?
  • The company that I work for have it up for sale with a potential buyer lined up, nothing is going ahead as things stand currently so they have decided to make the staff redundant as of the 4th April. My question is are we entitled too the 80% as we have no job too go back too? Some people we have spoke too have advised we are entitled and some advised we are not

    thanks

There is no entitlement to be placed in the job retention scheme. Your employer does not have to apply for it, and in these circumstances it is by no means clear he could apply even if he wanted to.
