Balance due on cottage booking - do I pay it?

Hi,
I have booked a cottage in North Wales for the late May half-term holidays, and so far I have only paid the initial deposit.
I have just been informed by the booking company that I must now pay the remaining balance for this cottage - even though it is highly unlikely I will actually be able to stay there.
Should I just pay the balance and then try to claim it back via the credit card company closer to the time if I am unable to use the cottage, or do I just refuse to pay the balance?
I'm not sure where I stand on this legally!
