Out of new job in 24 hours

Hello. I am looking for a bit of advice.
I started a new job on Monday, although I thought at the time it didn't seem the right time due to everything going on. I got called into a meeting at the end of day advising that they were going to have to defer my start date for another time in the future (no confirmed date yet). I haven't been supplied an employment contract from them but have signed an acceptance letter that had terms in it. They advised me in that meeting that I didn't qualify for the 'Furloughing' scheme due to not being employed with them from a certain date. Therefore leaving me with however many months of no income. I have tried to contact my previous employer to see if I could go back there temporarily but they are unable to take me back at this time. I just wondered what the best thing to do would be? I have applied for JSA and a temp job in a supermarket but this won't cover my full loss of earnings.
Thanks

You said that you have applied for JSA.
Depending on your circumstances also look at Universal Credit. https://www.citizensadvice.org.uk/benefits/universal-credit/ There are online calculators to help you assess entitlement https://www.gov.uk/benefits-calculators
Your JSA will reduce the amount of UC payable but given the government announced an increase to UC amounts from April I would expect you would be entitled to some UC in addition to your JSA even if you are single person without children or rent to pay.
If you are working you will not be entitled to JSA if you work more than 16 hours whereas you could be entitled to UC depending on your circumstances and maximum UC entitlement).Information I post is for England unless otherwise stated. Some rules may be different in other parts of UK.0 -
Thank you! It's all just a confusing and unstable time for everyone! I will have a look into Universal Credit.0
