help they won't refund me

Hi,

Wedding cancelled which is just devastating for me and on top of that I have to deal with this mess. So two questions here:

1. I booked a meal at a small venue who told me I had to postpone. I asked for confirmation that if one of my hens couldn't attend the new date that he would refund them? He said he would only refund half the amount less the depoit (nom refundable) but I thought that if the business cancelled they had to refund all as it's not our doing and would have attended happily had he not cancelled? I can't afford to refund out of my own pocket and really don't think I should have to. Is this right?

2. I cancelled my venue dresser following getting confirmation of her cancellation terms which is: if we cancel before 4 weeks before wedding then we get refunded less deposit. That's fine and we cancelled but she now owes us £900 and said "she's keeping it until she sees how the cancellations effect her" can she do this? We can't afford to just let her Keep it or wait months to receive it so what can I do? We want to be kind but we equally NEED our money back.
