Age will not make a difference if you are an employee. All UK businesses are eligible.
If the business joins the scheme and designates you as a furloughed employee then you will be covered if the employer would have let you go because of the coronavirus crisis.
They will let you know if that will happen. If they do not want to do this you can't get it but any employer not doing it if they could is turning their back on the UK people and economy, which I frankly believe would be disgusting.

Is this something the company have to actively join or opt in the scheme?

We started the day as open and in dribs and drabs different departments were told to go home. The business put out a notice to the public that they were closed. Eventually i was able to go home.

Reading the above, i'm not sure whether i'm now at home on

    - 3 day waiting period and then SSP
    - SSP right from the off
    - 80% of my wage (which would then open up another question).

    Any idea?

    Or none of these.
you are not sick or self-isolating so SSP may not be applicable
80% of wage is just an amount the employer can reclaim from the government should they claim choose to make use of the Job Rentention Scheme. They are not obliged to.

Anything the employer does should be in accordance with your contract of employment - but obviously employees are not in a strong position at the moment.

Only your our employer can tell you what they intend.

if necessary look at Universal Credit. https://www.citizensadvice.org.uk/benefits/universal-credit/  There are online calculators to help you assess entitlement  https://www.gov.uk/benefits-calculators
Information I post is for England unless otherwise stated. Some rules may be different in other parts of UK.

    Not automatically, sorry.

Do you have anything in your employment terms? Do you get only SSP or would you normally get employer sickpay?
The SSP on day 1 is for small and medium businesses up to 250 employees. Does that apply?
Is there a chance your employer is closing down entirely?

You could be furloughed from today, in which case you will find out soon. To join the scheme and provide you with the 80% the employer needs to declare you are furloughed and notify you. Then they also need to notify HRMC (but this system/portal is not yet set up - it's being built).

Hopefully you will get answers from your employer soon.

I don’t think that’s correct. SSP is payable from day 1 for all who are suffering from coronavirus or self-isolating. Employers with less than 250 employees will be able to recover SSP from the government (up to 14 days).

When we are off sick 'normally' (as in before this Coronavirus) you have the 3 waiting days and then you begin to get paid SSP on the 4th day. There is no employer sick pay, you just get whatever the minimum is.

There is zero chance we will close down entirely. When this madness ends we will certainly be back in business.

Our total workforce is under 250 yes. I don't know how many exactly. 50-100 at a guess.

Thanks for clarifying. I was going from https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/guidance-to-employers-and-businesses-about-covid-19/covid-19-support-for-businesses but yes I see, large employers will pay SSP from day 1.

I'm glad to hear of it. Up for a bit of an anxious night, I'm sure. I hope they will do what is right for you.

I can't see why not. All other deductions are still taken from any salary whilst furloughed.

There's nothing special or extra about being furloughed. The only difference is that the government is covering 80% of your earnings, and if the company is feeling generous then they'll top it up.
