It's Just Wrong

Sorry to vent and apologies if this has been covered before, but why is it that Vodafone makes customers jump through hoops to cancel their contract (in writing, 30 days notice), but if their customers want to upgrade they can do it on the phone instantaneously? It's just a nasty way of getting another month's payment out of people (and in reality, 30 days after write the letter plus the day or two in the post, plus the time to process, so effectively longer than 30 days from the time of making the decision to quit. Not to mention, who can be bothered to write a letter these days?? Lazy, I know, but all too easy to procrastinate or forget for a day or two).

I've even been told I'm "out of contract", and even so can't just stop paying my bill without getting into trouble.

I know this is all probably in my fine print (for a contract I took out ten years ago), but I still think it's a lousy policy and lord knows how much money they have squeezed from people who no longer wish to have their service.

Rant over. Thanks.

don't think it's just vodafone but all networks. I too feel unhappy with this policy and slightly surprised it's been taken up by a watchdog. Contracts can be bought in store or over the phone but to cancel we are forced to write in, they won't even accept an email (that's been my experience) !
  • It's not all the networks. Virgin and Orange will accept notice by phone. Cpw O2 is far worse than any; they refuse to give you the disconnection code until 4 days before the 30 day notice needs to arrive at their end - then make sure it's never received. Cpw O2 customers take note!

When I recently cancelled my Vodafone contract although had to give 30days notice, which is standard across the networks, they did want the cancellation in writing but it did date it from the date it was cancelled on the phone call not when they got the letter.

    Hi Mobilejunkie,

When you talk about 'the disconnection code', are you meaning the PAC which enables you to carry your number to another network or is this yet another con by our friends at CPW ?
I ask this as I am due to give notice at the end of the month and want to be prepared for all the tricks that they get up to....

    Cheers

Another con. Nothing to do with the pac code I'm afraid. Their way of making it extremely difficult to cancel on time without over-running. There's a thread on this somewhere too.

Virgin don't require 30 days' (or written) notice to cancel by the way.
