Employees of non UK companies

Hi, I am an employee of a non UK company.  I can't work because ot travel restrictions caused by the coronavirus. The government is paying 80% of the salary of employees of UK companies who can't work because of the virus (via the company) How can I claim the 80% of my salary? I am a UK citizen, I have lived in the UK since birth, 52 years ago. I pay tax and NI in the UK, I support my family that live in the UK. I imagine there are many others in a similar position, does anybody have any advice/information.

Been answered before. There was nothing in the announcements that said he company had to be a UK one, but we don't have the details. It would have to employ people in the UK. I assume your job is based in the UK as you pay PAYE, and your employer must be registered with HMRC to pay it. (It may be there is a UK subsidiary that actually employs you.) Your employer would have to apply to the coronavirus job retention scheme and furlough you.
  • My job is based overseas. The company is based overseas. The company is not registered with HMRC, My salary is paid gross. I complete a self assessment tax return, however I'm not self employed, I am an employee. However, as I said earlier, I can't work so won't get paid

The scheme is to protect UK jobs so only applies to UK employers that are UK businesses. I am surprised you pay UK tax. You must be UK resident and work somewhere with no double tax agreement?

The 80% scheme is given to UK businesses to part-cover the wage of employees that would otherwise lose their job due to the coronavirus crisis.
If you do not work for a UK business then you will not benefit from this scheme.

You will fall back on any protections granted to you from your overseas company, and failing that any insurances that you may have.
As a UK citizen and one that pays NI etc, then you may only have regular UK benefits available to you.
  • Doesn't look like I'll be getting 80% of anything.
