Ordered custom made suit for wedding that now won't go ahead - company won't let me cancel

Hi All, I was due to be getting married in September and ordered a custom made suit. I went for my first meeting (not fitting but general chat) and stupidly paid the full amount in advance - not cheap at £1000+. Three weeks later and we are in lockdown and the wedding will be postponed. I've contacted the company - a small local company - who have said they can't refund anything has fabric has been ordered. What are my rights? Thanks.

You have the right to receive what you paid for, anything else would be at the goodwill of the company making the suit.September is a long way away yet, it’s really quite possible that the wedding will go ahead as planned.I’m a Forum Ambassador and I support the Forum Team on the eBay, Auctions, Car Boot & Jumble Sales, Boost Your Income, Praise, Vents & Warnings, Overseas Holidays & Travel Planning , UK Holidays, Days Out & Entertainments boards. I don't think you will be able to expect the order to be cancelled and have a full refund based on this situation, so it would be at the discretion of the tailor what they can offer you back.
Are you able to put a hold on the suit and then get re-measured etc a closer time to when the wedding will go ahead? This is assuming they haven't started to cut and make the suit... Any small local business will be in major need of your support so try work it though with them.
Another option is if you had wedding insurance you may be able to seek advice through them..?0 -
I think your post means to say "the fabric has been ordered". I take that to mean that it hasn't actually arrived so they will have done no work except measuring you. If you really don't want the suit any more, ask if they can refund you what you paid minus the cost of the fabric and their time so far. I agree with other posters that the wedding will presumably happen one day, and if you cancel the order maybe your future partner will wonder whether you mean to marry them after all, or perhaps put on a few stone in the next year?0
