So far I'm quite impressed with Gulf.  During the cooling off period they introduced a new tariff that was significantly cheaper, and they let me switch to it without having to cancel and reapply, so no delay.  They also pro-actively suggested that I reduced the amount collected by DD.
They have just send an email which included the following:-
"It's likely that you'll be spending more time at home over the forthcoming weeks, which will mean you'll be using more energy than you would do usually. Because of this, it's vital that you provide us with regular meter readings and we're asking customers to do this every two weeks until further notice. This will help you to keep track of the amount of energy you use and to avoid any surprisingly high bills."
That will certainly help the surprising number of people on this forum who don't understand how their fixed direct debits work and mistakenly believe that a Fixed tariff means their meter is redundant because it's All You Can Eat !

and when it isn’t ‘all you can eat’ it’s always somebody else’s fault!
can you imagine the state of our energy supplies if everyone got an ‘all you can eat’ tariff - perhaps that‘s why they won’t exist.

My bro lives in a place with district heating. When it was first built it was on an "all you can eat" basis with a fixed cost. It lasted about two years because people just wasted heat and regulated their temperatures by opening doors and windows rather than by using the thermostats.

All the dwellings were then fitted with heat meters and people had to pay for what they used and some got a really nasty shock until they sorted themselves out.

Its the same with water, those on meters who pay for what they use are far more aware and frugal than those who are RV billing.
Never under estimate the power of stupid people in large numbers
  • Sounds sensible from Gulf to be fair

Yes, a good proactive measure, especially for those with only electric heating that used to be off from 9-5 at least...
Hopefully the weather will continue to improve as well to help reduce the impact.
