NHS staff member sent home with no pay

Last week when there was first talk of closing schools, a friend of mine panicked and told her employer if the schools closed she would have no alternative but to take time off without pay to look after her kids for 2 weeks until alternative help came available.  She works as an administrator in a busy GP surgery.  On Friday when it was announced that key workers could still take their children to school she spoke to her practice manager about changing her hours to comply.  The practice manager told her that as she had offered to take 2 weeks off work without pay she could stick to that as they had covered her hours.  Can they do that?

It was an agreed arrangement so I don’t see why not. From their point of view they have already made arrangements to accommodate the request which they would have to undo.

It wasn't an agreement, she just mentioned in passing that she would be left with no alternative and they took it as read.
