Single trip cover,

My children and I were booked to go to Turkey with Jet2 on April 12, thats obviously not going to happen now. Jet2 have allowed me to rebook for August, but the insurance policy I took out does not allow date changes, and its more than 14 days since I got it so I can't cancel it. Since then, any new quote I look at for a single trip, doesn't actually start ANY cover until the date we travel, so anything that happens before then (Covid 19 issues aside, obvs), isn't covered. I've not come across this before, can anyone tell me if this is normal?
Thanks
