Moving in date and covid 19 lockdown.

Hi, my partner and I are due to move into new rented accommodation this weekend (28th March). If the country is put in lockdown will we still be able to move? Is moving classed as essential travel? I have asked the estate agent and they do not know. We have signed the paperwork but not transferred any money yet. We are getting a little worried. Thanks

Moving house isn`t really "essential", and puts larger numbers at risk than if someone or two people just sat in their flat/house until it is safer, from what has been announced tonight moving house isn`t up there with things the authorities want us doing, but how enforceable that would be remains to be seen, I think the main thrust of tonight`s announcements are to get people to wake up and start taking this very seriously.

Agree with Crashy.  Moving is not essential.  Postpone the move until the virus is no longer a threat and let the third parties involved in your transaction to stay home and keep safe.
  • Hi we are due to move tomorrow after exchange and complete... will barratts still give us the keys do we know?
  • We are in the same position - supposed to be moving this week. The L/L is planning on moving in and served Section 21 two months ago. Legally obligated to move (I know only a court order can actually make you, but I mean loosely speaking) so is this essential? It’s not like it’s for fun, or on a whim.
Its very unsettling. Doesn’t help our L/L has said he’s moving in & doesn’t care about the virus - ‘you must go’ as he’s in a house and wants to be in a flat as he’s had a fall  (he’s 84) Hopefully things may be clarified tomorrow!

Moving home is classed as essential if you do not have a choice. If however you were say moving out of your parents into rented, but had the option to remain at your parents for the time being, then moving would not be classed as essential.

In polite terms tell you L/L that they are ignorant and putting peoples lives at risk. Suggest that he contacts the Local Authority. There's a network of support being put in place to assist people during this difficult time. A few weeks is nothing. Compared to simply staying alive.
  • Thanks for your comments. In light of the guidelines we have decided to not risk it and postpone the move. Luckily our current landlord is understanding and will let us stay where we are.
