Can I have no energy supplier?
Options
Topic really. Moving in with my GF so we can consolidate finances with all that's going on. I'm currently with Bulb. I have no arrears and have a monthly direct debit set up and would prefer cancelling supplier so I have no standing charge for now. For some reason I've the notion you cant be without supplier? I'd ring them and ask but without that option for few days unfortunately so thought I'd ask here

Thanks! That's what I thought tbh...cannot be without supplier, seems wrong but oh well. I know not to cancel my DD and I'll use comparison site like you say for zero standing charge..was hoping for a quick call and cancel but not an option it seems0

You would have have the supply disconnected to avoid the standing charge. That's a bit drastic, and will cost money to have it reconnected again in the future.
If it sticks, force it.
If it breaks, well it wasn't working right anyway.0 -
Maybe switch to someone with a £50 bonus for joining. That'll cover a few months of the standing charge.0

Ebico was the main supplier with zero daily standing charge(DSC). However they have now joined Robin Hood energy and whilst they have no DSC they have a minimum annual charge of around £100 for gas and £50 for electricity.

Even if you're not using energy someone needs to pay for the meter and elec/gas lines to be set up to go to the home.
The drastic way of doing this will be to have your supply disconnected - however you would then likely need to re-pay more than you save on the SC to do this and have it re-connected.
Plus it probably won't class as an urgent thing to be done, so likely wouldn't be carried out until after the lockdown.
You'll just need to accept you'll be spending maybe £20 during this time on a standing charge.0 -
It wouldn't be a good idea to leave a property without electricity. No burglar alarm, no PIR floodlights, no roomlights to make it look occupied. You might be burgled or find you have squatters ! No GCH, not even a fan heater with a frost stat. If you haven't moved back by late autumn then you are risking burst pipes, no to mention damp and mould.Should your circumstances change and you need to move back quickly, you might find it takes quite a while to get reconnected, especially if things have gone pear-shaped because of Coronavirus. Any savings will be trivial and simply not worth the risk.0
