hello there, my pay includes salary + commission. so the 80% wouldn't be substantial. could i get a job stacking shelves or something to help out and still get paid my main wage? cheers

It is up to your employer whether or not they apply to the Job Retention Scheme - they are not obliged to.
If they do furlough you then, on the basis of the information available, there is nothing to stop you getting another job. However if you will be getting paid I would encourage you to leave these jobs for people less fortunate.
It should also be said that the government has not yet published full details of the scheme.Information I post is for England unless otherwise stated. Some rules may be different in other parts of UK.1 -
I am in the same situation. Looks like I am going to be ‘furloughed’ 80% of my basic wage will not cover my mortgage and bills. I always work more hours to cover this. I am looking at taking on a temporary job to just make up the shortfall. Not to be greedy or anything. I understand there’s not just me struggling. I can’t find anywhere on any gov information that you can take a second job. But I can’t find anything that says you can’t either. Does anyone have any clarification one way or the other on this please? Might I add the job I have applied for had 30 vacancies, only 3 of these have been filled by anyone over 19, they don’t have the overheads I have.0

I've been told i will get the 80% from my company now. my understanding is they are granted the money to keep us employed with them, therefore id say its irrelevant weather we get a second job. Going to start applying today0

I've answer this elsewhere. The coronavirus job retention scheme is to preserve jobs. It does not look at who the job holder is. They could be a millionaire working for fun or have another job as well. I would not anticipate any rules about a second job, but I would remind people that their contract of employment must permit them to do other jobs. They will still be employed.1

There may not be any restrictions as far as the Govt are concerned as to whether you can do another job or not but your employer can certainly prevent you from doing so.Jeremy535897 said:I've answer this elsewhere. Do not pay your morgage immediately, ask for a payment holiday of 3 months due to virus. Same applies to any credit and also ask for time to pay from energy companies.lisadunhill said:I am in the same situation. Employment contracts usually have terms about second incomes, simplest answer is to ask employeer about having a second job to cover shortfall in income. With a second short term income, you are likely to be required to fill in a tax self assessment as you will probably overpay on the second job.0

Tim Wetherspoon also apparently said he didn't think coronavirus is spread in bars. I did make the point clearly that your contract of employment has to be looked at. I also agree with the many other posts on this subject that if you are lucky to be getting 80% of your wage, why take up jobs you don't really need when there will be others desperate for them?0
