Airline cancelled 1st leg of my return.

I am in Melbourne and the airline have cancelled the first leg of my return flight. They are also telling me that, as i booked through a travel agent that I must contact them, the agent, to get me on another flight. Doesn’t the airline have a duty of care, especially as they do have additional flights? Interestingly, i have recieved an email from the airline asking if i want to upgrade the non-cancelled second leg of the journey.

Where are you trying to get to? U.K.?
With borders closing, travel restrictions enhanced and airlines cancelling flights, you will find it more and more difficult to get home. You may have left things too late.
Now is the time to focus on getting home if you still can. You may well have to put your hand in your pocket to do so. It is also self-help time. Worry about refunds, who you can blame, who is responsible, who should or should not be doing something and aren’t - all until another day.
I am hearing stories of airlines being very flexible in getting people on flights, although mainly when you approach their staff at airports rather than overseas call centres.
Emirates, one of the last airlines trying to keep connections and routes open is drastically scaling back from 25 March.
