URGENT - family friend dead overseas

Good afternoon,

I am assisting my uncle who has effectively become the
next of kin for his close friend (UK citizen) who has sadly died whilst
travelling alone in Trinidad and Tobago. He has no family hence why my uncle is assisting.

His cause of death is not known and there will be a PM in coming days. In order to get the body repatriated, we are desperately trying to establish who his travel insurance policy is with. My uncle is at his friend's home address and has been through his papers but  can't see any policy details.

There is a checklist that he found which makes reference to him paying  £137 towards an annual travel insurance policy last August so it would seem that there is a policy in force.

FCO are providing assistance but obviously there be a huge financial cost if we can't find who the policy is with. There is no documentation in his possession at the destination.

I would be very grateful for any suggestions on how best to proceed.

Many thanks in advance.
Stuart

Check through his bank statements, see if that shows any payments.

The airline he flew out with may have recorded his insurance details.
  • Repatriating a body is always going to be expensive.

Local cremation (if possible) and repatriating ashes will be much easier.

Are there any funds in the friend's estate - bank accounts, house owned, etc - that will be able to meet any costs?

Possible but unlikely.  When booking online I have seen the question "Do you have insurance" but have never been asked for any detail if I tick Yes.

There will be details on his bank statement for August as to who the payment was made. he bank may be  able to supply this information but if there is no will appointing your uncle as executor things could be difficult.
