Not Yet Paid for Flights

I booked flights with Air Canada for 18th May back on 22nd February; as always I booked the cheapest flights which cannot be changed or refunded. I have only just got the credit card bill. At present Air Canada have no provision for flights beyond 31st March so I am expected (theoretically) to be taking them to Canada. What is my position re payment? Do I have to pay for the flights and then wait for a chance to change them/be refunded? What are my rights? Am I entitled to a refund even though the tickets are classed as non-refundable and non-transferable? This is a huge investment (£1,300) to make for a service I am unlikely to receive.

you have paid for the flights by credit card. You pay your credit card.
Air Canada have a waiver where you can cancel for future travel voucher to be used by 31st March 2021
    https://www.aircanada.com/uk/en/aco/home/book/travel-news-and-updates/2020/covid-19.html#/cancel-existing
(note it says bookings made before 31st March not flights before 31st March)
If you would prefer a refund you will need to hope that the airline cancels your flights to enable you to claim one.
Lots can happen in a week....nobody knows what the situation will be in 2 months time
  • Many thanks for your response. I am wondering whether my travel insurance is likely to cover me if Air Canada then goes down the pan and I have taken a travel voucher as credit? Yet it is always possible that Air Canada's current position may change for the worse (with regard to what they are offering) as the situation deteriorates re Covid-19. So a bit of a gamble as to whether to wait to see if the flights are cancelled.
