UBI would be progressively recouped from people earning enough to not need it through taxation. If implemented in the most efficient way it would effectively be a negative tax rate below a certain threshold, replacing all income related benefits and state pensions.2

But I see it as an interim reassurance to the correct solution. The announced level of support for those who qualify was bold and courageous, but doubling down is necessary. UBI will prevent the Government getting bogged down in technical nuances on how to handle tough cases like zero hours, the self employed, and people who would not ordinarily qualify for any form of state support but for which it's in the national interest to provide it. We need everyone who is working in our critical industries - the emergency services, various aspects of food supply and distribution, transport and logistics, manufacture of critical items - to be motivated, to be going all-out, to be going because they want to be there and because they feel it's safe and/or an acceptable risk in comparison to the value of their work, not because of economic pressures. And, when this tails off, we need them to go on a well-deserved, self-indulgant spending spree which will have the effect of kick-starting the normal economy again.
This this a million times this, every word of it.

Yet another reason why this petition & movement is essential :laurajane6486 said:If rent payments freeze then a landlord with no mortgages (and therefore not entitled to a mortgage holiday) will potentially lose their only income and will have no financial help from the government.
Implement Universal Basic Income to give home & food security through Covid-19

or put other protections in place for people in that situation.
