I think all these ridiculous petitions are started by Daily Mail readers; I haven't seen one that made any sense yet. I bet No 10 are wishing they'd never started it.

But, as long as we're going down that route, we should go the whole way.

I want a petition, not only for a new NI number, but also a new NHS number, a new bank account number, new passwords for all my online banking accounts and my house number should have a random digit added to it. Oh, and I want a new date of birth, preferably making me about ten years younger.

And I don't even have child tax credit.

They managed to mess up my NI number a couble of years ago and had to issue me with another which caused no end of grief. I hate to think of the issues this suggestion would cause even though i know the intent is good.
  • My wife has received a letter today from the Child benefit people apologising for losing the data.
I have today read (yes it was the Daily Mail!)that the original error has been compounded by the fact that a lot of these letters (containing NI numbers!) have been sent to out of date addresses!!

You really couldn't make it up could you.
  • If nothing was reported about these disks then no one would be any the wiser about what information was on them and would probably just have thrown them away. As it stands now, every fraudster in the country will automaically know what this data pertains too if they find them or will offer cash for them if anyone else finds them.

I personally think there should have been a media blackout untill it was absolutely necessary

Lets hope the info on the missing discs don't end up for sale on the Internet.

    From todays; Times:

Websites sell secret Bank details AND PINs.

Why rely on government or banks to look after your personal details when you have the means of holding banks accountable if they fail to comply with your Terms & Conditions before granting credit or a loan etc.

Actually only 7 million NI numbers have been lost as children don't get an NI number allocated until they are about 16.

I think changing bank account is probably the only thing you can do and apply the common sense approach to security issues that we are all supposed to do anyway.
