Talk of being  behind the times reminds me of one of my relatives who banked with Coutts.
Even in the 1970's they sent-out monthly bank statements with red sealing-wax on the back of the envelope.  All letters started with:
                                       '  Dear Sir,
We are favoured with your letter of........(date) '
    and ended with:
'  We are, dear Sir ,
                                                         Yours faithfully
                                                                     Coutts & Co. '

The   Coutts  service  was excellent and far better than that offered by a typical high street bank at the time.  They even provided leather cheque book and statement covers.   I could not help feeling that this was how banking was in the Victorian era

  • My friend gave the analogy that it's like receiving an email from someone but your mail provider not providing the sender's email address and only showing their name.
That is exactly what it feels like to me!
I'd much rather not see the account number of the person who sent the money than having to wait for 2 or 3 business days for my payment to arrive at the other end. This is still the norm with many continental banks, especially when sending money between different banks.
This is not my experience with the continental banks I've used for transfers in the same currency (Euros), though usually transfers where conversion between currencies was needed took around 5 working days, which was quite long..

Thank you everyone else for the suggestions, I'll have a look at the three banks you mentioned above and will consider some more of the more modern app-based banks.

The bank won't be at liberty to disclose the account details to you,
Why would a bank not be at liberty to disclose a payer's account details to the payee? A payer has neither promise nor expectation of privacy regarding their account details.

Unfortunately data protection legislation is open to interpretation. Banks will take their own view and set their own internal policies. When a payment is unknown to the recipient, it could be the result of a mistake, or it could be a suspicious transaction, probably easier to err on the side of caution and have a simple rule. There have been several threads before this one suggesting that it isn't just Lloyds who will refuse to tell you the originating sort code and account number. I don't think you can easily compel a bank to provide the details if they refuse to do so.
  • Monzo shows you everything.
Sort code and account number for both sent and received payments. If someone pay you for the first time, you not only see their name, but also their sort code and account number. You also see the time of each payment not just the date like most other banks show you.

For example, I sent money to my other bank. One click on the transaction shows me:
    My name, Monday23rd March, 9:45
    Payment reference
    sort code + account number

    History with this payee
number of payments sent to this account + total amount sent
number of payments received from that account + total amount

There's also an option to add receipts
