Sainsbury's are recruiting for roles so not sure who you spoke too.

My local store. He did say there has been very high demand (I mentioned I had worked in hospitality and lost my job).

There are jobs on the sainsburys jobs website just not in your area.
Theres also Iceland and the Food Warehouse, maybe try Home Bargains and B&M as well.
