Gas consumption doesn’t make sense

Not sure if anyone can advise on some confusion we are having with British Gas. We recently moved house and even though we repeatedly supplied gas readings the website still estimated the initial reading (never mind).

The issue is the the initial reading they took was 00952 on 6th March and today I submitted 01004 so isn’t that 52kwh?? Reason I ask is British Gas say that’s a consumption of 582kwh which for the amount of gas we have been using (just 2 of us with limited heating and job usually seems wrong! 

Am am I missing something?

Yes you are missing something. A metric gas unit is approx 11.2. kWh so 582kWh would be correct - at around 3p per kWh that is approx £18 for 2 weeks.

Yes you're missing something.

Your gas meter does not record kWh, it records cubic meters (m³). The formula to convert your meter reading is 1 unit on your gas meter equals approximately 11.2 kWh. So 52 units is about 582 kWh.

The exact formula used is stated on each bill since the calorific value (amount of energy in the gas) can vary throughout the year.
