This is the argument for investing via broad tracker funds.
Active funds can work too, but it is generally good to diversify. In my own case I hold the bulk of my investments in funds, and will be buying more funds in the near future. My stock portfolio is more of a punt, in a sector that I have become very familiar over the years, so I had to give stock picking a try.
Buying individual stocks is high risk at the best of times, and now even more so, but at these prices biotech is super cheap. If the stocks I hold survive, many have the potential to double or triple in value in a very short time, and some could easily increase x10 or more.
All the while this situation has been going on, good news about the companies I hold has been coming out, which in normal times would have sent stock prices rocketing, but instead prices have fallen. It's a case of buy and hold/monitor till things improve, buying in the dips where possible as this could carry on for some time.0 -
The original concept for trackers comes from efficient market theory pricing. Nothing at all to do with the constituents of an index.tropic_of_Username015 said:BrockStoker said:What ever happens we will always need food and energy. And medicines/healthcare.This is the argument for investing via broad tracker funds, which cover — as near as is practicable — all the businesses that it's possible to invest in.0 -
I reckon there may well be a massive decline in purchases while people get through their 10 year stocks recently boughtmcooke999 said:Toilet roll companies might be a good idea

If the market keeps falling then usage rates may increase. It can be hard to hold tight in these situations. Pressure builds up. As always the pro traders will be one step ahead in their toilet roll usage.GiddyInvestor said:

Although we're seeing lots of outflows at the present time, those with a good stash will be able to mop up when things get messy. It's important in these scary times to hold your nerve and make regular deposits.

Not all stocks have been heading down. Have a look at Ocado which has been booming. Other home delivery companies such as Amazon seem likely to do well.0

Basically everyone will need everything they always have and life will go on.The only thing making me sick is all the blind panic, anyone would think it's the black death...'We don't need to be smarter than the rest; we need to be more disciplined than the rest.' - WB2
