BA cancellation do you get enough notice?

Do you get enough notice if your flight is cancelled or re-routed?  Just a bit concerned.  Direct flight to heathrow next week by BA.  If flight is cancelled there is a possibility of having to go through transit in miami with new flight.  In that case I am wondering whether I will need to apply for ESTA and if I will have time to do it at short notice.  The worst scenario I have not got ESTA as I did not plan to transit and it was beyond my control.  Will I be denied boarding?  Will need to check this with BA so difficult to get through.  Other option is to apply for one whether it will be needed or not. If BA make flight changes, in my experience they do this using the information and contact details held on your booking.  Now might be the time to check all your contact details are correct under Manage My Booking.

Personally, for what it costs, I would apply for an ESTA so you have another choice of options should the situation worsen.   

I would also be considering curtailing and coming back earlier.  Start to expect massive flight cancellations. There will be no magic flying carpet laid on to repatriate those stuck overseas.
