Advance tickets - no refund but change fee waived

Hello
This isn't a question, more a vent. Is anyone having problems with changing journeys?
I have flights and trains booked for the coming week (Manchester, Glasgow, Dublin) and had already decided not to travel. Unless they are cancelled I can't get my money back but all have offered a waive of change fee but how can I know when is safe / sensible to travel?
Every leg of every journey I have looked at is more expensive so I'd have to pay the difference on each. I'm covered by insurance but it's 4 different bookings and the excess almost makes it a waste of time.
I'm thinking of starting a petition for Avanti West Coast to change their rules at this time. No point trying with Ryanair because that O'Leary would probably send empty planes rather than refund anyone.
I'd be interested to know if anyone has had any success despite the rules with Advance tickets being non-refundable. It's not a fortune but for me it's a lot of money to lose if I take the hit.

I’ve just changed my Advance ticket for a future date. If I chose a time slot more expensive they asked me to pay the difference but would not refund me if I chose a cheaper time slot. The new ticket they have given me is for a station 15 miles away from my original booking. Completely unhelpful
