Event Cancellation - Admin Fee

Evening all. I think I know the answer to this, but thought I would post just to hopefully reinforce this.
Paid £90 in November to take part in a walk that is happening in 3 weeks time.
Just had the expected email to say that this has been cancelled due to current events. They have two options:
1) Defer to a new date in 2021 (dates unknown at present)
2) Get a refund, however £10 will be deducted as an administration fee.
Is option 2 correct? Doesn't really sit  right with me.

Is it right? No ... they can't make any deductions if they are cancelling as they are seeking to breach/break the contract.

However, how much time do you want to invest in pursuing this?

I thought as much. It also annoyed me in the way the announced it. They offer three different packages:
Self funding - You pay the entire cost of the walk
Mixed funding - You pay some, the rest you have to raise for charity
Charity funding - The charity pays for your place, you then have to raise a certain amount to cover all costs.
I alwasy go for the self funding option. In the email they said:
CANCELLATION – refund of the monies paid, minus a small administration charge (£5 for 25km, £10 for 50km – equivalent to the ‘charity sponsorship’ reg fee)

Seems like they are using the "equivalent to the chairty sponsorship fee" as an excuse.
Not too much time. I did  get a dressing down on FB when I queried this by fellow walkers concerned for the companies fiances. Hopefully they would have some kind of insurance to cover this. Plus i've lost out on 2 nights at a Travelodge as it was non refundable.

  • Just out of curiosity, what is (or was!) the walk?  Is there a website?

We enter a lot of events and are charged cancellation insurance (normally cancellations are weather related)
