Can anyone point me in right direction please. My son has just lost his job and told to leave work with immediate effect. It is the travel industry and have been hit hard. His job was on a one year contract to cover maternity leave and he is 3 months in. They have paid him another month. 3 staff were asked to leave in total. The boss told them it was not to do with their work just trying to survive during this period. Is there any gov money he can access or what does he do now? Thanks for any advice.

            He can claim Universal Credit.

Can he claim anything to help with his rent?0

Or is that included in universal credit? Not familiar with the benefit system at all.0

Universal Credit will provide some help with his rent, providing he is renting from a private landlord, housing association or local authority. It won't pay it all, but will pay the majority. The comments I post are my personal opinion. While I try to check everything is correct before posting, I can and do make mistakes, so always try to check official information sources before relying on my posts.1

And what about JSA? Does he apply for this as well? He is thinking of coming back to live at home so I'm not sure how this would affect things. Thanks for this advice , it's very helpful.tacpot12 said:Universal Credit will provide some help with his rent, providing he is renting from a private landlord, housing association or local authority. If he needs help with rent it will be universal credit only, there is no more JSA in this situation. He could also apply for reduced council tax.If he moves home with you then Obviously he cannot claim rent to live with you. If he wasn’t claiming for housing costs there would be the potential for old style JSA but this would only be beneficial if he had savings over 16k or a partner with a income, otherwise UC would be comparable.1

He hasn't got savings over 16k. Been reading about new style JSA. Could he apply for this? He probably won't need help with rent.0

If he doesn’t need help with rent and he has the relevant years NI contributions, then yes1

Thank you. Will pass all this info on.0

Dont forget that if he is going to give up his rental to move back in with you that he will need to serve his landlord with his contractual notice - this may be many months of payment.1
