Ford Focus - Clutch & Slave Cylinder

I have a Ford Focus 1.6 Zetec 2002 (02) which needs a new clutch and slave cylinder. Just wondering if anybody has an idea of what i should expect to pay for the parts and to get it fitted?

Cheers
Matt

I dont no tbh, but if some replies I be interesting to find how how much one would expect to fit a new cam belt, as it says in book 40k miles or 5 years. Had a service yesterday and the friend who did it said it may need one.

Poppycat you can shop around. You may have some luck sourcing the belt itself, probably best to avoid ebay and ask the main dealers parts department for a quote for one, and call around to get someone who'll just charge the labour only costs. On some cars it's common to replace some other bits like the water pump while changing the cam belt.

Clutch itself is around £40 from here http://www.clutch-specialists.co.uk Might be worth calling ford parts and asking for a quote, it gives you a price to shop around with, but the ford ones may last longer and work better.
  • Does anyone have any ideas whether or not my clutch being so high will effect my fuel economy as my mpg seems to be decreasing every time i fill up!

Only if the clutch is slipping. Test it with the handbrake on.

I had a Clutch master + slave changed on my 02 Rover 45TDi few month ago by a local garage here in the Forest of Dean. The parts were around £150 and the labour was one hour at £50 so = £200 all together (done under AA warrenty).

These parts on this car are BMW made (as they use to own Rover back than) and are sealed so they can't just service them, needed to replace it alltogether, mind you Ford should be cheaper than that.

  • I have actully had both my clutch & slave cylinder changed and also the cambelts replaced both using genuine parts for my Ford Focus 1.8 petrol. Mine is a 1999 model.

The clutch kit parts were £85.91 & slave cylinder was £67.40
Cambelt costs were £57.63 for the timing belt and £16.25 for an auxilliary drive belt, these prices were of course less VAT so that needs to be added plus the fitting of the parts.

All in all the clutch cost me £365 and the cambelts £235 including labour at a local independany garage. If I had gone to the main dealer I suspect that I would have been paying a great deal more.

    Good luck
I used to be indecisive, but now I'm not sure!
  • Just been quoted £430 for clutch + slave for 2004 Focus 1.6 at a main dealer.
Mr Clutch in Luton want £330 for same.
Probably go for whoever can fit me in this week but if anyone knows somewhere better let me know!

I'm just about to change mine (with the help of boyf and an engine hoist!) - parts cost £90 (kit and slave cylinder) but the (very) hard work will be free (well I might have to buy him a bottle of wine )

Just as a matter of interest what is the best way to test to see if your clutch has worn?

The way I have been told is to build your speed up to 30mph, then put the car into 4th. As soon as you have done this stick your foot right down on the throttle. If your revs increase faster than your speed on the counter then you need a new clutch but if your speed increases faster than the revs then your fine!

Is this a good test then?

My focus has only done 42k so I don't think I will need a new clutch any time soon!

timing belt was done on my focus at 4 years old and 50 k.
it cost £180,should have been £160 but was charged a bit extra labour as bottom pulley was very tight,i was warned this may be the case before he started the job.
